Ellis works with horses and the people who ride them — boarding barns, retirees, and animals who have changed hands more than once. Sessions can be on-site in the Carolinas or remote with a handler on the ground.

About this work

I rode before I could write, then spent years as a barn manager, which is a better education than any certificate. Horses will tell you about a farrier they don’t trust, a bit that pinches, a person who used to come on Sundays.

A surprising amount of “spooky” is just an animal who was punished for saying no. I go slowly. I don’t diagnose lameness — that’s your vet — but I will tell you if the horse is bracing for a particular arena corner, or if they want to be turned out with a different neighbor.

For remote sessions I need a handler who can walk the animal, and a quiet twenty minutes. On-site work in western North Carolina is limited to two barns a week.

Juniper would not load. Three trainers, a new trailer, still no. Ellis asked if anyone had ever slammed the divider on her hip. My previous barn had. We took the divider out. She walked on. I cried in the parking lot.

Max was shutting down in the arena. Ellis said he thought he was still in a program. We stopped lunging and just hand-walked for a month. He started nickering at the gate again. That’s the horse I bought.
