About this work
I kept cockatiels as a child in Chennai and later worked aviary shifts at a rescue in Queens. Birds are not small dogs with feathers. They are long-lived, hyper-social, and extremely literal.
A lot of people come to me after a partner leaves, or after another bird dies, and the remaining bird starts screaming at 5 a.m. The bird is not being dramatic. They are calling a flock member who isn’t answering.
I work over video with the bird in frame. I will ask you to cover mirrors, note sleep hours, and sometimes to change who in the household says goodnight. I send a written recap and a short audio of anything I want you to repeat in the bird’s hearing.
