Diego works with messy, loving multi-animal homes — fosters, recently adopted dogs, and the resident pet who did not vote for this.

About this work

I ran a small rescue out of my house for eight years. That is a crash course in who actually runs a household.

When a new dog comes in, the resident animal is rarely “jealous.” They’re usually trying to keep a routine that used to keep them safe. I look at feeding order, doorways, who greets guests, and who gets the last walk of the night.

I work in English and Spanish. I will give you two or three changes, not a twelve-step program. If those don’t shift things in ten days, we get back on a call.

We added a second dog and the first one started resource guarding the hallway. Diego had us feed the original dog first, in the hallway, for a week. It felt too simple. It fixed it.

Coco came from a reservation roundup. She would not make eye contact. Diego said she was waiting to see if we were temporary. He had us stop crate-training at night. She slept on the rug, then the bed. Three months later she’s a different dog.
